The NORBIT IMUd is a decoupled inertial navigation system designed for use with all NORBIT WBMS and WINGHEAD multibeam echosounders.
Unlike an INS integrated directly into the sonar head, the IMUd can be installed independently at a suitable location on the vessel or autonomous surface vessel. This makes it particularly useful for permanent hull-mounted multibeam installations where the inertial measurement unit should be positioned close to the vessel’s centre of gravity.
The IMUd can be configured with an Applanix POS MV WaveMaster II or OceanMaster, or with an SBG Apogee or Ekinox.
These established GNSS/INS solutions provide accurate and dependable position, heading and motion data for georeferencing multibeam measurements. The system delivers the same type of navigation performance available with NORBIT’s integrated WBMS and WINGHEAD configurations while providing greater freedom in equipment placement.
The IMU is protected by a durable POM housing suitable for installation aboard survey vessels and autonomous platforms.
Separating the IMU from the sonar head allows each component to be installed in the most suitable position. The sonar can be mounted for optimal acoustic performance, while the IMU can be positioned to achieve accurate vessel-motion measurements.
The IMUd is fully compatible with NORBIT multibeam systems and software. The included Sonar Interface Unit connects the navigation solution with the sonar and wider survey system.
This integrated architecture supports efficient configuration, acquisition and processing across NORBIT WBMS and WINGHEAD installations.
